Accommodations & Amenities

Sheens House is a recently renovated 19th-century building in the Newington district. Double rooms include fireplaces and tea/coffee makers, while certain suites add private patios with garden views. Free visitor parking permits are provided during stays, and complimentary bottled sparkling water and milk are stocked in the guest fridge.

The guest house sits 1 km from the University of Edinburgh and 2 km from the National Museum of Scotland. Edinburgh Castle is 2.5 km away, with Edinburgh International Conference Centre also within easy reach. Edinburgh Airport is 9 km from the property, and the Royal Mile is a 15-minute walk across the Meadows park.

Family-Friendly Features

Family rooms and a Family Suite with multiple beds are available for larger parties. The quiet residential street reduces noise, and a terrace offers outdoor space for children. Host John provides detailed local recommendations for family-friendly restaurants and attractions.

Services & Practical Perks

Self check-in allows late arrivals, and the host responds to messages quickly day or night. A welcome pack includes step-by-step parking instructions and a list of nearby bakeries, cafes, and restaurants. Free street parking is available on weekends and overnight, and a nearby parking garage costs £7 for an Uber ride into the city center.

Dining: Complimentary bottled water, milk, and cookies in room

Parking: Free weekend/overnight street parking with permits provided

Extras: Chocolates or cookies, self check-in, welcome pack with local tips

Best for: Families, couples, visitors to Edinburgh's historic attractions

“I found the recent renovations to be a smart touch, blending modern needs into a historic structure; its Newington address places it within walking distance of the University of Edinburgh and a short ride from the National Museum. I particularly like that they offer family rooms and free parking permits. This is a solid choice for those wanting to explore Edinburgh without sacrificing peace and quiet.”

Excellent Stay Near the University

The room was beautifully decorated, I especially liked the attention to detail. The bed was very comfy, and I found the shower and bath to be very clean. the water pressure was good. I also appreciated the list of local eateries and attractions. It was very helpful. I was grateful for the fridge stocked with bottled sparkling water near the entrance.
The stairs were quite narrow and a bit difficult to navigate with heavy luggage.
